Eloping to Ireland
A growing number of couples are interested in eloping to the ‘Emerald Isle’ and it is easy to see why. Ireland offers a unique combination of romance and mystery that makes it perfect for an intimate wedding ceremony. Whether you are looking for a sense of adventure or you just want a beautiful backdrop for your romantic ceremony, Ireland has something to offer you and your beloved.
How Easy is it to Elope to Ireland?
If you are considering eloping to Ireland, but are concerned about how difficult it might be to arrange then do not panic! It is actually fairly easy for American citizens to legally marry in Ireland. There is no residency requirement for Irish marriages, although couples do need to give 3 months notice of the wedding. However, you do not need to give notice in person which means that couples from America or indeed any other country can give notice by post using a ‘Postal Marriage Notification‘ document. This is something that you can obtain by getting in touch with any registrar’s office in Ireland. It is best to get this taken care of promptly to avoid any delays.
Couples are required to attend a face to face meeting with the registrar five days before the actual wedding. This is done to allow the registrar to verify that all documents are in order and that there is no legal impediment to the marriage. This means that couples will need to arrive in Ireland in time to have this meeting! Why not have a reverse honeymoon?
For additional information about the legal requirements for eloping to Ireland visit the Department of Social Protection website, paying particular attention to section 1.3 which deals with postal notification.
