What are 3 Reasons Why Millennials Aren’t Marrying?
Why Millennials Aren’t Marrying?
Millennials, those born between 1980 and 2000, have experienced a different world than their parents or grandparents. They are the least religious generation in U.S. history. This generation came of the marrying age during a financial recession. For others, fear of divorce has influenced their over all rate of marriage. These concerns and others leave Millennials questioning traditional marriage. Though many desire the union, they are cautious in making the decision to wed.
1. Religion
A considerable number of the millennials have chosen to forgo religious denominational connections and do not identify with any particular church. The moniker given to this group is the ‘Nones’. Yet they have not forsaken all religious beliefs in God, praying, or a connection to creation. Desiring to have a marriage ceremony on their own terms the Nones are choosing to elope at a higher rate than past generations.
2. Economic Lows
Millennials came of age in difficult economic times, and as in the great depression the percentage of marriages have dropped. Coming out of a generation that put an emphasis on being financially ready to marry, this generation of young adults has chosen to do just that: wait, by at least 5 years. And in the waiting many choose to cohabit. Cohabiting has a cost equivalence to marriage without the ring, forgoing the health and financial advantages to marriage. This is where an elopement package could contribute to the health of a Millennial couples union, by saving at least 90% off a traditional wedding.
3. Uncertainty of Happily Ever After
Four out of ten Millennials grew up in single parent households. In fact being a good parent is more important to most Millennials than having a good marriage. The caution in marrying may play a positive role in deciding whom to marry. For Millennials researching the benefits of marriage may lead them to select partners who work well with each other.
Because of religion, economics, and caution, the trend setting by Millennials as covered in another blog, has seen a growth in elopements. If you are a Millennial who has put off marriage long enough and are now ready to get married you will find an elopement package to fit your needs and desires.
