Eloping in Scotland!

When Eloping in Scotland most people think about eloping to Scotland, they automatically think about the infamous Gretna Green, perhaps the most famous elopement destination of all. This little town in the Scottish Borders became famous back in 1757 when England & Wales implemented stricter laws regarding marriage, prompting young lovebirds to flee North across the border where it was legal for boys aged 14 and 12-year-old girls to marry simply by declaring themselves in the presence of witnesses – a service the local blacksmith was more than happy to provide.

Alternative Elopement Destinations In Scotland

These days, the famous Blacksmith’s Anvil is often booked up years in advance. If waiting for a slot in Gretna is not an option (although you should check for cancellations) then do not fret, as Scotland is full of beautiful locations that are ideal for your elopement. The capital city of Edinburgh offers a stunning blend of history and culture and can offer some gorgeous historical venues. Alternatively if you would prefer to elope to somewhere a little more cosmopolitan then Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow is a great choice. Finally for the couple who are a little more wild at heart, what could be better than eloping to one of Scotland’s many islands?

Choosing Your Elopement Venue In Scotland

If you are going to opt for Gretna, then most brides set their hearts on forging their marriage at the traditional Blacksmith’s Anvil, but the village has other venues to offer which might not have such a lengthy waiting list including the Smiths Hotel and Bonshaw Tower. For those heading further North, Edinburgh boasts plenty of intimate venues ideal for elopement including hidden gem Robin Chapel while Glasgow offers the stunning ‘House for an Art Lover‘ designed by famed architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Make Your Wedding Day Memorable By Eloping To Scotland

The main attraction of eloping is the romantic aspect of running away to marry your true love and few places can offer a more romantic setting than Scotland. After all, this is where the concept of eloping was born! If you are considering Scotland as your destination, be it Gretna or one of the bigger cities, check out our Where To Elope In Europe page for further detail.
