Eloping – Should you Run Away and Get Married?

Eloping – Should you Run Away and Get Married?

Eloping is something that we love talking about and we also love hearing other people’s thoughts on the topic. A great article that we read recently about whether or not people should elope was this one by Stef Daniel.  We wanted to share our thoughts on some of the points that she raised.

Why Couples Abandon Plans For a Traditional Wedding

Stef mentions a number of the reasons why couples might choose to abandon their initial plans to have a traditional wedding in favor of an elopement and many of those reasons are in the results of our ‘Why Did You Elope? poll. She mentions something that we have discussed in the past – the fact that as soon as you announce your engagement everyone suddenly has an opinion about what your wedding needs to be like! This even comes before making sure the guest list and the seating plans do not aggravate long running family feuds! Weddings are a minefield and a growing number of couples choose to elope in order to keep the focus where is should be – on them – instead of on family drama!

When Dream Weddings Change As We Get Older

Another valid point that Stef makes is that because marriage itself is different these days, so too is how we get married! A growing number of couples are getting married at an older age than what was once the norm and as we grow up and get on with our lives, the dream of a big white wedding with a huge cake and 300 guests becomes far less important. It is often replaced with a desire to cement your relationship in a low key, intimate fashion. The older we get, the more our priorities begin to change and spending $25,000 on a day long party seems inappropriate when that same money could be used towards buying a house.

Eloping is becoming increasingly popular for many of the reasons that are mentioned in the article and as Stef points out, things have changed. Eloping no longer means a courthouse wedding – unless you want it to! Vendors are now offering couples elopement packages that include traditional wedding ‘must-haves’ in their elopement and honeymoon packages that will enhance your elopement experience without the expense and headaches that accompany a full blown traditional wedding ceremony.
