Eloping To The Poconos -It’s Not What You Think

Eloping to the Poconos- It’s Not What You Think

Are you thinking of eloping to the Poconos?

It is no longer heart-shaped tubs and cheesy old-school resorts, the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania has become a beautiful and vibrant tourist area.

Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains is a Great Destination Wedding Location

It is indeed a great destination wedding location. There are luxury hotels and resorts in different price ranges, great shopping and antiques, a few really nice day spas, world-class water parks, skiing, and of course tons of golf. For the true nature lover there is the Delaware Water Gap National Park and the Appalachian Trail. The Delaware River itself is beautiful and clean and you can float down in a raft or tube, or canoe or kayak. You’ll find a historic hotel, the Shawnee Inn right by the river. They have a world famous jazz club, the Deer Head Inn, and a local theater with live music shows. From Stroudsburg to Jim Thorpe there is lots of charm in the small towns. Mount Airy Casino is the other end of the spectrum, and offers glitz, gambling and entertainment along with well-appointed accommodations. Wineries are popping up everywhere and there is our own ‘wine trail,’ as well as several excellent local craft breweries.

How Large are the Poconos?

Be aware that the Poconos encompasses a very large area – 2,394 square miles to be exact. I recommend focusing around the Stroudsburg area, where you will find the most options. It’s less than 2 hours from New York City and Philadelphia. I’ve lived in the Poconos for over 40 years and I love it here. I have my own lovely garden, Harmony Gardens designed especially for elopements and small wedding ceremonies, and I’m here to help.

Three Day Waiting Period or Waiver?

The great news about Pennsylvania is there are no witnesses required for the marriage license, however there is a three-day waiting period before your license is valid to use, but if you are traveling far, you can request a waiver from the local court when you apply – but please call them in advance to discuss this option. If there is a military deployment involved, you’re sure to get your waiver, but traveling is often also considered a good reason to waive the waiting period. By the way, this three-day waiting period doesn’t mean you physically have to be here for the three days, but you need to go together to apply for the license sometime between 60 days to 3 days before the ceremony date. If you are within driving distance, you might drive to PA, apply for the license, and pick it up when you return to elope.

Congratulations on the choice you have made to elope! It can be and should be a meaningful and memorable milestone in your life. Just the two of you – what could be more romantic. Do it your way, from casual to formal, there is something special waiting for you here.
