Treat Others How You Want to Be Treated
Eloping is becoming more popular, but it is still considered the untraditional or unorthodox way to get married. People will have preconceived ideas about elopement and they may not be very nice. It can be a natural reaction for eloping couples to retaliate to negativity by making unkind remarks about traditional weddings. However, if you want friends and family to respect your choice to elope then you are going to have to offer the same in return. Eloping isn’t for everyone nor is a traditional wedding. Respect each other and things will be so much smoother!
Don’t Keep it a Secret (At Least Not From Everyone)
One thing we always recommend when it comes to planning an elopement without upsetting family is not to spring it on your family! At the very least you should tell your immediate family (parents and siblings) and maybe your best friends before the wedding. You can always ask them to keep it a secret from other acquaintances until after the wedding. Eloping is not the norm for most people and parents especially often need time to adjust to the idea. You could even let them be involved in your plans, or allow them to host a reception dinner at home afterward.
Have a Celebration At Home
As touched on above, it can be a good idea to host a reception or some kind of celebration at home after your wedding. This helps those who could not attend your elopement feel like they are still a part of your big day. Remember, your friends and family love you and they just want to celebrate with you! Having a BBQ or a cocktail party can be a lot less expensive than a full wedding reception!
