I Wish I Eloped: Why Couples Often Have Wedding Regrets
So many couples who do choose to elope do so in order to avoid the stress and the family politics that often come with planning a wedding. We have also seen many couples who have been deep into planning a big wedding and then canceled everything in favor of eloping. With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the reasons couples have told us ‘I wish I eloped’.
I Wish I Eloped Instead of Pleasing Other People
One bride, who is now planning an elopement for her second wedding shared her thoughts on her first trip down the aisle. Having been with her first husband since high school, when they eventually decided to get married everyone was excited to celebrate with them. However, as the couple did their best to please everyone else they lost sight of the reason for the celebration, and the day passed by in a blur. The bride said she never had a chance to enjoy her wedding as she was so busy tending to the needs of her guests. “I wish I eloped the first time around, so this time I am standing my ground!” says this particular bride!
I Wish I Eloped Instead of Dealing With Family Drama
There are multiple stories we could use to highlight this particular wedding regret! One bride did try to compromise on her dream of eloping by inviting just 18 guests to her small wedding, but that didn’t stop her mother causing a scene and ruining the day and leaving the bride saying ‘I wish I eloped! Another bride told us she no longer is on speaking terms with several family members due to drama at her own wedding and she now wishes they had eloped and gone on a luxury vacation instead!
I Wish I Eloped Instead of Stressing Myself Out
We have previously talked about how the stress of planning a wedding can be too much to handle for some couples. One bride told us ‘I wish I eloped because planning my wedding almost killed me!’ With 150 people invited the day soon got out of hand and because the parents were paying this bride was overruled on several important decisions. The wedding day was beautiful, but the horrible experience of planning a big wedding has tainted those memories.
