Why Are There Less Big Weddings?
Over the years at WhereToElope.com I have noticed a distinct paradigm shift in the wedding industry. There are now less big weddings than ever before as the popularity of elopements continue to climb. The big question is why? In my opinion, I answer to the question of why can be found in my book, BIG Weddings SUCK! but let’s summarize some of the key points again here.
More Searches for Elopements
One of the key pieces of evidence that I have uncovered regarding why big wedding events are declining is that online searches for ‘elope’ have quadrupled. In the past few years, the number of searches for that keyword has grown from 110,000 per month to 450,000 per month. This is a strong indication of a generational paradigm shift. Millennials and Remarriages are favoring smaller marriage events and elopements over big traditional weddings.
Reasons to Choose a Smaller Wedding
In my book I discuss how choosing a big wedding can put pressure on couples in terms of their time, energy, stress and money! However, there are other more specific reasons that couples have shared with me in our survey of couples who have eloped regarding why they chose to elope. I believe that these couples reasons have a lot to do with why there are less big weddings.
Some of the most common reasons are:
- To Save Money
- Avoiding Family Drama
- To Save Time
- Choosing Something Different
Another reason why big weddings are declining these days is that elopement is losing some of the stigmas that was once attached to it. Small marriage ceremonies and elopements are becoming much more socially acceptable.
