Planning a Mountain Elopement

Planning a Mountain Elopement

The great thing about choosing to elope instead of having a big traditional wedding is that it opens up so many opportunities for choosing breathtaking venues. One option that is seeing an increasing amount of interest is planning a mountain elopement. This option gives an intimate option for couples who love the outdoors and want to incorporate a little adventure into their special day. It also makes for a stunning backdrop for your wedding photographs. Let’s take a look at planning a mountain elopement.

Why Choose Planning a Mountain Elopement?

If you are not quite sure if a mountain elopement is really for you, then let’s take a brief look at some of the advantages that are associated with heading to the mountains on your wedding day.

  1. Unique Experiences – Eloping to the mountains offers the chance to create some unique experiences. Choose a remote spot that is off the beaten track to create your own dream wedding. Maybe you can even find some snow!
  2. Privacy – Often, when you choose an outdoor wedding by the lake, or on a beach you can end up with a larger audience than intended as passersby stop to watch the proceedings. However, with a mountain elopement, you are more likely to have privacy, especially if you choose a more remote location.
  3. Beautiful Backdrops – If you are planning to take some photographs, mountain landscapes can provide stunning backdrops.
  4. Budget-Friendly – A mountain elopement can be very budget-friendly. You likely won’t have to pay for venue hire and there will be no need to decorate. Mother Nature will take care of that for you! Your main costs are going to be transport and the officiant.

How to Plan Your Mountain Elopement

When it comes to making plans, one of the big considerations will be when the best time to visit the mountains. Thanks to the higher altitude, most mountain regions have short periods where there is no snow, so July to September is likely the best time if you want to avoid snow. However, some couples like the idea of a little snow, in which case you could choose May or June. You will want to avoid deep Winter as conditions could be too dangerous.

Another thing to take into consideration is making sure that you have permission to get married on your chosen mountain. As with any wedding, you will need to apply for a marriage license, but it is also worth noting that if your chosen location is within a National Park, you will likely also need to apply for a wedding or special use permit. These are usually pretty inexpensive.
