Planning to Elope During a Pandemic: What You Need to Know

Planning to Elope During a Pandemic

The wedding industry certainly looks a little different in 2020, doesn’t it? Big, traditional weddings are out and smaller, more intimate celebrations like micro weddings are becoming more popular than ever before. Couples who would never have dreamed of planning to elope a year ago are now embracing the idea.

There is a great deal of uncertainty in regard to when big traditional weddings will be back. Many in the wedding industry say that they don’t expect things to go back to how they were once even when the pandemic is over. Brides are being steered towards smaller weddings out of necessity, but we are hearing from many that they wish they had been planning to elope all along! It has turned out to be the right choice for them after all!

So, is planning to elope during a pandemic any different from eloping at any other time? Yes and no! Many of our usual vendors are still offering the same small wedding and elopement packages that they always have, so in that respect, it is business as usual. However, we are also seeing many venues that usually cater to larger events, or who are new to the wedding scene offering elopement options that means as an eloping couple you actually have far more choices than ever before!

One of the key differences that we are seeing is the varying capacity restrictions from one state to the next. Large gatherings are more or less a no go at the moment nationwide, but the limits on the number of guests you can have will vary widely not just by state, but even down to zip code. Some may allow celebrations for 30 people while other areas are capping weddings at just 10 people.

Destination Weddings

For many couples who are planning to elope, the idea of a destination wedding is a popular one. However, during the pandemic, this is a little more difficult to pull off! International trips are very uncertain at the moment. Even if borders between the United States and other countries are open at present (and many are not) this can change with less than a day’s notice. In some places, you may be subject to up to a 14 day quarantine on your entrance or return. For the time being, choosing domestic destinations is a safer option. However, even within the United States, we would urge you to check with local authorities for the most up to date guidelines regarding out of state visitors.

Considering the Risk

Of course, there is more than just the official guidelines to consider when planning to elope during a pandemic. Even if local restrictions allow you to host a wedding and to travel freely in the area, you will still need to consider the health risks for you and your guests. It is wise to look at the current infection rates within the area and look for any recent outbreaks or surges.

Generally speaking, the states and counties with fewer restrictions are seeing greater infection rates. This presents a tough decision – do you choose to go somewhere that will allow you to have more guests? Or, is it safer not to invite vulnerable family members to an area with high numbers of COVID-19 cases? It is a discussion you and your partner need to have as a team. Many couples planning to elope during the pandemic are staying closer to home – even their own backyard!
