Wedding Horror Stories You Can Avoid by Eloping!

Wedding Horror Stories You Can Avoid by Eloping!

Weddings should be an exciting event full of fun and happiness. However, they can also be a huge source of stress and for some reason, they can also bring out the absolute worst in people! Over the years, I have heard some real wedding horror stories. Most of them could probably have been avoided if the couple had chosen to elope!

The Bride & Groom Ended Up in Jail!

Let’s start with one of the more recent wedding horror stories I came across regarding a wedding in South Africa. The couple had planned their dream wedding in April 2020. Despite strict coronavirus lockdown rules in KwaZulu-Natal, they chose not to postpone the celebration. The result was that both the bride and groom were arrested at the ceremony and spent their wedding night in separate jail cells! Not only that but the officiant and all 50 wedding guests in attendance were also arrested for breaching the nationwide ban on public gatherings. We can’t help thinking that all of this could have been avoided had the couple decided to elope instead!

Wedding Horror Stories About Momzillas!

One of the most common reasons why couples elope is to avoid family drama. It often seems like a wedding makes everyone feel they have a right to interject with their own opinions about how things should be done. If the wedding horror stories are anything to go by, it seems like the moms are the biggest culprits! It seems we all know at least one story involving a Momzilla! From the mother-of-the-bride who wore a white wedding style gown to her daughters wedding, to the groom’s mom who gave a scathing speech about how the bride was stealing her beloved son while implying she had trapped him by getting pregnant – we have heard it all! There is just something about weddings that seems to set some mother’s off! It’s no wonder so many couples decide to ditch the parents and elope instead!

Bad Weather Ruins Outdoor Ceremonies

No matter how well you plan your wedding, there is one thing you cannot control – the weather. Many couples have fallen foul of unexpected storms and high winds when hosting an outdoor wedding. Eloping won’t change the weather, but it is much easier to quickly relocate a handful of people to an indoor location than it is to relocate 50 to 100 guests! Most elopement vendors have indoor and outdoor ceremony sites so that if the weather doesn’t play nice, you still have a beautiful wedding venue.

These are just a few of the wedding horror stories I have heard, I could go on for a long time detailing the mass brawls, porta-potty disasters, dropped cakes, and inedible catering tales that I have gathered during my time in the wedding industry. The underlying theme is the same. If you elope, or have a small intimate wedding everything is much simpler and much easier to keep under control. If you know you have volatile family members – you don’t have to invite them. Keep it simple!

Do you have a horror story about a wedding you have attended? We’d love to hear about it.
