What Does it Mean to Elope in 2023?

Eloping has been around for centuries! In the 1600s, eloping meant that a couple was running away to get married in secret without the consent of their parents! Over the years elopement has come to mean something different. So, what does it mean to elope in 2023?

What Is Eloping?

Eloping is no longer something secret or shameful. In fact, since the COVID-19 pandemic, elopements have become much more mainstream in the wedding industry. To elope in 2023 essentially means that you are just having a small-scale wedding either with just the two of you in attendance or a small handful of your closest guests. Some of the couples who will choose to elope in 2023 may still do so in secret without forewarning their friends or family, but others will include their parents, siblings, and best friends in the celebration. Some elopers will choose to travel to a different city or state to tie the knot, but you can just as easily choose to elope at home.

Why Do People Elope in 2023?

You might find yourself wondering why couples are choosing to elope in 2023. One of the main reasons we hear from our couples is that they want to save money. Eloping is much less expensive than a traditional big wedding. However, some of the other reasons we have been hearing recently include:

  1. Avoiding Stress & Drama – Planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful experiences of your life. Not only do you have to juggle a laundry list of vendors and choices, but more often than not family politics and drama also start to affect your plans. Many couples just decide they are not dealing with any of it and elope instead!
  2. Choosing Privacy – Some couples just don’t like the idea of a huge wedding with 250+ guests. For them, getting married is a more intimate moment leading them to choose a more private ceremony. Eloping is the ideal solution. All they really need is an officiant and a witness, but some will choose to invite a few guests.
  3. A Spontaneous Decision – While many couples plan their elopement up to a year in advance, there are still those who embrace the historic spirit of elopement by making it a spontaneous thing! A lot of couples who have been together for a long time will suddenly decide to elope on the spur of the moment! Las Vegas is still a very popular destination for these spontaneous elopements thanks to the large number of wedding chapels on the strip and Nevada’s same-day marriage licenses.

Are you planning to elope in 2023? We would love to hear more about your plans and your reasons for choosing to elope.
