Why Eloping Could be the Best Decision You Ever Make

It’s no secret that here at WhereToElope.com, we are big fans of elopement so it is always great to hear about others who feel the same way! Recently we came across an article in Cosmopolitan magazine where Nancy Dunham was talking about why eloping was the right choice for her. It makes for an interesting read and we wanted to share our thoughts on it with you. We’ll summarize the key points below while adding our own take, but you can read the article in full here.
Eloping Will Save You Money
One of the first things that Nancy explains is that her decision to elope with her husband Wayne was not driven by money. Year after year our poll has revealed that the majority of couples choose to elope in order to save money, so it was interesting to hear from a couple who did not cite this as a deciding factor – although Nancy admits that the financial savings certainly were welcome since they were struggling to make ends meet. However, the main reason why they eloped was that they wanted a marriage, not just a wedding ceremony.
Eloping Makes it All About You
Refreshingly, Nancy also admits that there were some selfish reasons for eloping as well. She describes seeing many friends tying the knot and thinking that the bride and groom often seemed like an afterthought. All of the attention was put on the festivities and not the reason for the party! Nancy and Wayne did not want that. They freely admit to wanting their wedding to focus entirely on them as a couple and their love for each other. They also wanted to avoid those dreaded family politics. These are both reasons that often come up when we ask ‘why did you elope?‘
Eloping was clearly the right choice for Nancy and Wayne. They have now been married for over 20 years and are still every bit in love as they were back on the day that they spent just 15 minutes planning a wedding!
