Elopement Announcement: How to Break The News!

Once you have made the decision to elope, it often feels like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. All of that pressure to create the perfect wedding is gone. The financial burden is instantly eased and you can put petty squabbling over the guest list in your rearview mirror! It’s time to breathe! However, it would be remiss of us to say that choosing elopement is all plain sailing! In fact, there is one element of eloping that is a cause for anxiety for many couples – the elopement announcement!

When to Break The News

When it comes to making the elopement announcement you have a couple of choices regarding when you break the news. You can go ahead and have your wedding and then confess after the fact, or you can pre-warn your loved ones ahead of time that they won’t be invited to your wedding. The option you choose will be specific to your own situation. You may even take a different approach for different people. For example, you may decide to give your parents notice of your intentions to elope but want to wait until afterward to announce your marriage to the extended family and your friends.

There is no correct elopement announcement. Your choice should be based on what is best for you and your family. If you are concerned that your family will make you feel guilty and try to push themselves into the celebration, then you may feel that it is best to wait until the vows have been exchanged to let them in on the secret!

Is My Elopement Announcement Going to Cause Upset?

One of the biggest worries couples have when it comes to making an elopement announcement is that their friends or family will be upset by the news. There is no getting around the fact that at least one person is likely to feel sad that they were not included. However, it is important to remember that this is your wedding, not theirs. They may be upset initially, they care about you and will get over their feelings when they see you happy. You may be able to alleviate some of the upset by being clear about your reasons for eloping. Take the time to explain that this is what you want and what makes you happy and it is not a slight against your family or friends!

If you are planning to elope, have you already planned out your elopement announcement? We would love to hear from you!
