The Micro Wedding Trend Sweeping TikTok!

The Micro Wedding Trend Sweeping TikTok!

If you have been following WhereToElope.com for any length of time, you know that small weddings are nothing new, but recently they have started to become more mainstream! You only have to scroll the #microwedding hashtag on TikTok to see that the micro wedding trend is sweeping through young brides looking to save money on their weddings! The hashtag currently has over 150 million views with thousands of videos showing planning, inspiration, and the weddings themselves!

Let’s take a look at why the micro wedding trend is suddenly sweeping TikTok!

What is the Micro Wedding Trend?

Micro weddings are scaled-down wedding celebrations, usually having fewer than 20 guests in attendance. Often they are shorter and simpler than a traditional wedding. Most micro weddings will have a short ceremony followed by a casual celebration or intimate dinner. They differ from elopements in that micro weddings retain the structure of a traditional wedding – just on a smaller scale. In comparison, elopements tend to be a little less traditional in their format.

Why Are Micro Weddings so Popular?

The micro wedding trend is certainly not a new one. Smaller weddings have been gaining popularity over the last decade or so, but the COVID-19 Pandemic was when micro weddings truly exploded. This was out of necessity rather than choice, but it did demonstrate to couples that smaller, less expensive ceremonies could be just as beautiful. This meant that even when COVID-19 restrictions lifted, micro weddings were here to stay!

In 2023, the average cost of a wedding is more than $29,000. That is a hefty price tag, especially for younger couples. It comes as no surprise that we are seeing more and more weddings that trade in some of the expensive traditions in favor of smaller, more intimate celebrations. If you scroll through the videos on the #microwedding hashtag on TikTok you will see scores of young couples swapping extravegant receptions for intimate dinners at a fraction of the cost.

Do Small Weddings Mean Longer Marriages?

Not only are micro weddings a cheaper option, but studies show that they may also lead to loinger marriages! According to a study conducted by Emory University in 2014, couples who spent most on their weddings were the ones more likley to get divorced!

Would you consider trading in a big traditional wedding to hop on the micro wedding trend? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
